Finally a full QWERTY phone for Tracfone users. The 500g features an excellent full QWERTY keyboard for texters wanting to take advantage of the Tracfone prepaid plan. In addition to the texting capabilities, the 500 has a full compliment of features previously unavailable on any Tracfone offering. The ability to load Java apps is quite nice as there are plenty of sites around the web that offer free Java apps. Other features like mp3 player, video recorder, 1.3 mp camera and SD card slot make the 500 worth considering.

Phone Look and Feel

The LG500g has a Blackberry look feel to it with slightly smaller dimensions. Of course, the QWERTY keyboard is what really makes this phone shine as the keys are spaced perfectly for easy texting and web browsing. The hard keys are responsive and provide a satisfying hard click when pressed. Keys are nicely sized to keep finger fumbling to a minimum. Popular symbols are all represented on the screen with a symbol toggle button that's well within reach. A nice touch is the quick text key for 1 key press access to texting.

Options menus are pretty standard. The one cool thing is the customizable home screen widget you can add your favorite menu items to. Here, you can add shortcuts to the camera, mp3 player or whatever else you want. Once set, you simply press the up key to enter the widget, scroll to the function you'd like to use and launch it.

A tour around the phone we find a volume rocker to the right, headphone jack at the top and charge port on the left. Navigational keys are familiar and intuitive. Just below the screen we find a navigation key pad with embedded select button, to the left and right we find soft keys for access to Options, exit, browser and other functions. Next to those, we find the usual send/end keys. The only negative to report is the location of the SD card which requires battery removal for installing.

Despite the super low price, the LG500g comes brimming with features that up until now were only a dream to Tracfone users. Features include built in MP3 player, 1.3mp digital camera, video recorder, full HTML browswer, JAVA app capability , external SD card and the usual tool set such as Calculator/Calendar/To-Do List/Notes/Stopwatch/Converter/World Time. We highly recommend upgrading to Opera Mini for enhanced web browsing, it's free and easy to install.

The one thing we were really impressed with was the email like texting interface. The interface offers a To line just like email that you simply press the center select to add your contact. Below the message box, you get a cool little widget that allows you to insert multimedia files like pictures and videos without having to go into an Options menu. For $29 you can't go wrong with this one.

The Tracfone LG500G is an excellent device with features that were previously off limits to Tracfone users. You can finally check email, install apps, listen to music, download ringtones, transfer files and text like a pro. An excellent little handset for under $30, so if you are a Tracfone user in dire need of an upgrade, the LG500g is highly recommended! Also makes an excellent starter device for kids.
