Straight Talk prepaid wireless One of the biggest hurdles to switching cell phone plans used to be loosing your beloved cell phone number. This of course has been a thing of the past since the number portability rules came on line in 2005. If you are contemplating Straight Talk, one of the best cell phone deals in years, then rest assured that your number can be ported easily and quickly. You don't even have to call customer service because it can all be done online. Here is a guide to porting your number to Straight Talk.

Before you get started, you should have the following from your current carrier: Current cell phone number, Account number, account password/pin number and last 4 digits of your social.

Straight Talk offers port ins for the following carriers: Alltel, US Cellular, Cricket, Sprint, Virgin Mobile, Qwest, Tracfone, TMobile, Boost Mobile, AT&T, Consumer Cellular, Metro PCS, Edge Wireless, Nextel, Verizon and Net10. They also have an "other" selection.

Steps to Porting your number to Straight Talk Wireless

1. DO NOT deactivate or cancel your existing service until your port is COMPLETE.

2. Once you have ordered and received your Straight Talk phone, simply log on to the Straight Talk page and go to the Activate Page.

3. Select the third choice: "Activate my phone with a number transferred from another company."

4. You will be prompted to enter your new cell phone's serial number, zip code and valid service card (either $30 or $45). If you bought a used phone, you will need to purchase a card before you can proceed.

5. You will now be prompted to create a Straight Talk account. If you are porting your number over to Straight Talk, its best to enter accurate information. If you are not porting a number, then this information does not have to be accurate if you wish to remain anonymous.

6. Once you have created your Straight Talk account, you will be asked to enter your personal information again this will be for the portability process. You can simply copy over your Straight Talk account information if you completed that accurately, otherwise, you will have to complete this accurately.

7. The final stage is to enter your current carrier's account information. You will be asked for your current cell phone number, current provider account number, account password/pin number and last 4 digits of your social. Straight Talk will be unable to port your number if you do not wish to provide these.

8. Submit your data and you are done. At this point you will be presented with a ticket number which you can reference should you have issues with your port and need to contact Straight Talk Customer service. You will also be presented with the following information for completing your port:

Remember this can take from a few hours and up to 7 days depending on your current service provider. You can check the status of your port case by calling our Customer Care Center at 1-877-430-CELL (1-877-430-2355) and providing them with the Ticket Number. You will know your port is close to being completed after your current phone stops working. At this point, follow these steps to complete your activation:

Again, You will need to follow the steps below once your old phone STOPS working. Failing to do so will leave your Straight Talk phone inactive even if the port is complete.

1. Once the old phone has stopped working for at least 5 minutes, call *22890 from your new Straight Talk phone and listen to the voice prompts.

2. At the end of the call you will receive confirmation that your activation was successful. If you do not receive this confirmation, call *22890 again and repeat the step above. (This call needs to be successful for your phone to work).

3. As soon as you see the confirmation message, press the OK key to reset your phone.

4. Once your call to *22890 completes successfully, you need to make a call from your phone to be able to receive calls. If you would like, you can call 1-877-430-CELL as that is a free call from your Straight Talk phone. Before you are connected, you will be asked to select your language. Once you've completed the call you will be able to receive calls.

5. For the majority of customers, the steps above will leave your phone active and ready to use. If for some reason your phone does not work after following the steps above, wait one hour before calling the Straight Talk Customer Care Center at 1-877-430-CELL (1-877-430-2355).

**Remember, your old phone must Stop working before you can be sure that the port is complete.
